Chapter 7: How to speak Australian

Chapter 13: A sister’s promise

1.Ram said the luck came from inside the person. Explain what he meant

He probably meant that luck is not just a matter of life, but a matter of your own life, your own experiences and your own behaviour.

2.Does the story have a happy end? Explain your answer.

It has a happy end. It is very different from the film, but it’s more original and surprising. Ram has find Gudiya, his brother is fine and he is going to be the rest of his life with his real love. What else can he ask for?

Chapter 12: The last question

1.In this chapter we learn the true reason why Ram Mohammad Thomas went to the show Who Will Win a Billion. What is it?

He finds out that the presenter is the man that beat Neelima Kumari and the one who was engaged to Nita.

2.Why did Ram choose the answer A?

Because he used Half and Half and only two answers were left: A and C. He decided to choose A because the presenter had told him that the correct answer was A, and Ram knew he was lying.

3.What was Smita’s secret?

She was Gudiya!!

Chapter 11: Look after your buttons

1. Do you think Prakash Rao was right in giving his wife all what she wanted?

Well, I don't think it was a problem, and even more if we take into account that men in India are not too considered with their wives...

2. Is that a reason to steal and betray your own family?

I don't think that any reason would be enough for betraying and stealing your own family.

3. What is voodoo and in which country do people usually practise it?

Vodoo is an indigenous religion that takes place from Togo to Nigeria (West Africa). It is practised by the Ewe people, Kabye people, Mina people and Fon people of southern and central Togo, southern and central Benin and the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria.

4. How did she make voodoo to Prakash Rao's brother?

She was given a button from one of his brother's shirts and some hair. the she stuck them on a doll, she killed a chicken and put the head of the doll into the chicken's blood. Then she started sticking pins.

5. In your opinion, who was more cruel to each other, Prakash or Arvind Rao? Why?

Prakash was more cruel, because he stole to his brother's business, and the only thing that Arvind did was to be honest and fair.

Chapter 10: At home with a killer

1. Explain how Salim became a junior actor

He went to Mukesh Rawal's office and asked him for a role. Although he said that he was too young, Salim kept working to reach his dream. He took some pictures of himself and gave them to Pappu Master. During his "session" of photos, he found Mamman and he ran away, but while he was running, another man pushed Mamman off the bus. Salim then gave the photos to Pappu Master and got a role.

2. Would you betray someone who has saved your life if you know he's a criminal?

I don't think so, because it's dangerous. Some people would say that being friends with a powerful man would be a great opportunity to defend yourself from the others, but this kind of people usually get you into trouble.

3. Why do you think Thomas didn't tell Salim about the quiz show?

Probably because he wanted to keep him safe from his mission of killing the presenter, but I'm sure he had always wanted to help Salim, whatever the result of the programme was.

Chapter 9: A love story

1. Ram and Nita fell in love. But why could they not get married?

Because Nita is already engaged to another man, and her family wouldn't allow that a poor buy like Ram was her husband.

2. Nita is engaged to a rich and successful man who will pay her family 40,000 rupees. Do you think arranged marriages are a good idea?

Of course not. Although love is probably an invention of advertising, people should marry who they want, because they are going to spend all their lives together, and it doesn't matter how much money do  you have, because if you are not happy with your life you'll be an unfortunate.

3. Why do you think Swapna Devi said this about his son: "perhaps death will be the best thing for him"

Because for ill people death is sometimes the best solution, because they stop suffering.

4. In this chapter we see Thomas is really generous. Why?

Because he has already been in that situation, so he easily puts himself in the shoes of poor boys, and if he has to give money, he does, because he wants to help people.

5. Why is this chapter particularly important?

Because he finds the love of his life and he does everything to help her, but her family don't let him do that, because they ask for too much money. Here we see that Ram sets his own goal.

6. How was the man of the hospital able to pay Thomas back?

Because from now on he will be his servant.

Chapter 8: Murder on a train

1. "Fifty thousand dreams had suddenly been taken from me". What did Ram mean?

He had 50,000 rupees in his pocket which could help him to reach his dreams: visit his brother, see Gudiya, eat good food, buy some clothes, including shoes... After the robbery he was left with nothing, so his dreams disappeared.

2. Thomas is thinking about the Police and asks himself: "Would the police tell me that I was a hero for killing a robber? Or would they call me a killer who had shot a man dead without even knowing his name?". Why does he think this? What do you think the Police would tell him?

Because the Police is not reliable enough in that country, so a poor little boy would just be the center of laughs. In fact, in another chapter Ram said to his friend: "Whatever you do, wherever you go, never go to the Police". The Police would probably have done that, and maybe they had beat him to "teach" him what he should not do.
